The Indian Premier League (IPL) has asked ten franchises to submit their list of retained players by November 15, the upcoming auction of which is likely to be held in the third week of December. When two new franchises were added to the mega auction last year, the old teams could retain a maximum of four players, but there is no such limit for mini auctions before IPL 2023.

A report in ESPN Cricinfo states that during the upcoming mini auction, the teams will get an additional Rs 5 crore, in addition to the money left over from the previous auction, taking the total auction purse to Rs 95 crore.

Notably, Punjab Kings had the biggest purse left after last year’s auction at Rs 3.45 crore, while Lucknow Super Giants finished their entire purse. Chennai Super Kings had Rs 2.95 crore in hand, followed by Royal Challengers Bangalore (Rs 1.55 crore), Rajasthan Royals (Rs 0.95 crore) and Kolkata Knight Riders (Rs 0.45 crore).

On the other hand, defending champions Gujarat Titans were left with Rs 0.15 crore, while three teams — Mumbai Indians, Sunrisers Hyderabad and Delhi Capitals — had Rs 0.10 crore.

Mini-auctions have made some of the most expensive purchases last season despite the franchise having small purses and Ben Stokes as well as his England team-mate Sam Curran and Australia all-rounder Cameron Green are some of the overseas players expected to attract the biggest bids when they enter the auction this year.

Meanwhile, three teams — CSK, DC and LSG — bought only seven overseas players in the last auction to look to fill the final spot, while the other teams could release one or more of their overseas players to fill the vacancies.

A total of six franchises replaced injured players, such as Mathisha Pathirana (CSK) in place of Adam Milne, Tristan Stubbs (MI) in place of Tymal Mills, Corbin Bosch (RR) in place of Nathan Coulter-Nile, Andrew Tye in place of Mark Wood (LSG), Aaron Finch (KKR) in place of Alex Hales and Rahmanullah Gurbaj (GT) during IPL 2022.

All these teams will now have to decide whether to retain the injured players or the original player or keep both players.
